  • Foodival, Making, Cinema, Restart, Field Day

    Foodival in the Guardian

    There are so many things you can get involved with over the next few days in Tooting, hopefully something for everyone! Why not start tonight at the Streatham Cemetery Chapel by helping Jeni & SMArT make the Bird with Borrowed Feathers for Sunday’s Field Day.  It’s a Mindful Making workshop where you can help to construct a giant bird and adorn it with “borrowed” feathers.

    Then tomorrow you could check whether there are still tickets for Furzedown Low Carbon Zone’s screening of The Emperor’s New Clothes starring Russell Brand at Streatham Park Bowling Club, just off Tooting Common.

    On Saturday, get your broken electronic items fixed at the Tooting Restart Party at Mushkil Aasaan.  And then join in a free puppet-making workshop, have a picnic, or walk all the way from Tooting to Clapham Junction only on the grass with fanSHEN on Sunday’s Field Day.

  • Restart Party Report

    Last Saturday, TTT hosted another Restart Party with the Restart Project at Mushkil Aasaan in Tooting.  As usual the brilliant volunteer repairers did their utmost to help prevent an assortment of electrical goods from laptops to kettles to cameras from going to landfill.

    It can be scary to see your beloved item taken apart (see the DAB radio and laptop above!).  However these things go wrong so readily these days due to built in obsolescence, that learning how to provide a simple fix can make you feel good and save you money, while doing your bit to lessen human impact on the planet.
    The Fixing List

    The Restart Project is a London-based social enterprise that encourages and empowers people to use their electronics longer, by sharing repair and maintenance skills. Thanks again to Ugo, Janet and all the fixers. 

    It would be great to set up a local group so if you are interested in becoming a local repairer in Tooting, contact us via transitiontowntooting@gmail.com.  The next Restart Parties in Tooting are on Saturday July 11th and Saturday September 26th.  Put the dates in your diary and keep any broken electronics out of the bin till then!

  • The Anti-Upgrading Exhibition – at the Lightbox

    ‘Our enormously productive economy demands we make consumption a way of life’.

    This is a quote from 1955 on the wall of an exhibition now showing at the Lightbox Gallery in Woking.

    A toilet brush is the unlikely centre-piece of the exhibition.  Its description reads ‘This is a well designed toilet brush from Addis bought in the late ‘80’s when our house was built, and still as good as new! It still performs perfectly…. it has probably been used over 30,000 times…. (This brush has been very thoroughly cleaned!)
    The exhibition ‘Waste Not…’ runs (free) until 8thApril at the gallery (30 mins on the train from Clapham Junction or Wimbledon).  It is an exhibition of old appliances and other objects that are still used – or at least have been kept in the hope of being used!  
    It shows the objects themselves and short films of their owners talking about them.  It’s all about maintaining things – it is the anti-upgrading exhibition! 

    On 28th March, the South London Makerspace and Restart Project held a fixing and mending workshop at the gallery where they showed members of the local community how to fix their electrical and electronic items, sharpen old saws and tools and mend self-assembly furniture with new parts printed on a 3-D printer!

  • Restart Party 2

    Tooting’s second Restart Party was held on Dec 3rd at Mushkil Aasaan with more electronic items being fixed by volunteers for free courtesy of the Restart Project.  We had quite a few laptops and tablets this time round. Sidd (pictured) had come all the way from Ilford with his laptop screen recycled as an external monitor – pretty impressive!

  • Restart Party, Wed 3rd December – let’s get stuff fixed!

    Do you have an electrical or electronic item that needs fixing and don’t want to have to throw it away? 

    After a fantastically successful evening in September we are delighted to announce that the Restart Project, a London-based social enterprise that encourages and empowers people to use their electronics longer, have agreed to run a second “Restart Party” with TTT in Tooting next month.

  • Restart Party Report

    Tonight’s Restart Party was very cool. Thank you so much to Ugo and Janet for organising this event for us at Mushkil Aasaan. Naseem I hope your intercom and kettle were fixed! So I took my TV, only two years old, and watched guitarist Ben and 11 year old schoolboy Sonny, take it apart. It took an hour or more to test every bit of it but in the end the verdict is that I can buy a £17 power supply board to fix this rather than buy a £200 replacement!  Thank you so much boys – I will try!  You can see them in this slideshow:

    The Restart idea is surely the way forward. We cannot endlessly plunder our planet for finite resources to make disposable electronic and countless others products.  Had a great chat with the Gaia Foundation about their Short Circuit report which focuses on the lifestyle of electronic gadgets and the true cost to the earth.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered and attended this evening – let’s do it again.
